"Blue Candle" By Pierre Guillaume

Pierre Guillaume, independent perfumer-designer, founder of Parfumerie Générale, has created more than a hundred scents since his first opus « Cozé » in 2002.

For La Chambre du Marais, he has imagined a woody, floral and slightly spicy atmosphere, where the Guyana mahogany meets the absolute of the Turkish Rose, The Ceylan Cinnamon and The Venezuela Tonka beans, giving the place a warm and luxurious feel.

The scent of the “Blue candle” is clearly centered on the luxurious wood omnipresent in the hotel: the mahogany.

The perfect balance between the floral (rose), sensually spicy (cinnamon) and vanilla (Tobacco, Tonka beans) notes creates the unisex and federative atmosphere. The note is sweet, present, warm, elegant, but nuanced enough not to be « perfumesque ». The guest should be under the impression that the olfactive atmosphere comes from the materials used in the interior decoration. The olfactive signature will come from the daily combustion of the candle and from the spraying of the fabrics, with a fragrance adapted from the “candle” formula. Tonka beans notes are reduced while plum and peach fruity notes are enhanced for a wild but yet light atmosphere. La Chambre du Marais “Blue candle” (300g) will be available for sale at the price of 75€.

Jewish Paris

This tour will explore the various facets of Jewish history and diversity in the heart of Paris: the Marais district, lively cafes, specialty shops, and Kosher restaurants, an Art Deco Synagogue designed by Hector Guimard. Not far from this historical neighborhood is the Shoah Memorial and the Righteous Alley, a place for remembrance and understanding. You will then visit one of the biggest Jewish Art and History Museums, hosted in a gorgeous hôtel particulier from the 17th century.

There has been a Jewish presence in Paris since medieval times. Yet by the end of the 12th century, Jews were evicted from Paris for the first time. It wasn’t until the Revolution that they were fully welcome back, gradually creating a vibrant community, the largest in Europe.

Paris with a contemporary artist

It might be difficult for a foreigner to discover the universe of cutting edge, Parisian art galleries. With his in-depth art history knowledge and his practice in sculpture and painting, your guide will offer you a unique insight into an otherwise seemingly hermetic art world.

Starting in the Pompidou Center’s National Museum of Modern Art, you will browse the major avant-garde “ism” movements (Fauvism, Cubism, Dadaism and Surrealism), focusing on their main pioneers: Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Duchamp, Dali and Miro amongst others. If contemporary artists inspire you more than the modernists, you can opt instead for a tour of the current exhibition on show at the Palais de Tokyo contemporary art center.

Depending on the time, your guide will then take you to 2 or 3 galleries such as Emmanuel Perrotin, Daniel Templon, Kamel Mennour or Gagosian’s. This tour will give you the opportunity to glimpse the Parisian art life.

Black and white

Black and white are the basic colors that we usually never notice in a museum, but they instil paintings and sculptures with strength and power.

Just look at the immaculate white marbles of the Greek statues whose original colors have disappeared with time. Or observe how, from the time of St Francis of Assisi, a dark-skinned Wise Man makes his appearance within the Nativity scene. Then there’s the innocent pale face of the young Renaissance princess painted by a follower of Pisanello and the guilty ugliness of Saint Sebastian’s murderers, powerfully depicted by Mantegna.

Without forgetting Veronese’s beautiful Venetian ladies who knew every trick in the book to preserve the whiteness of their skin. A wonderful contrast with the sober black outfits of Titian’s male portraits. What symbolism hides behind white and black?

Together, we shall discover these two colors’ underlying meanings and the artistic techniques used to express them.
